SAVING DEMOCRACY

VISION: To build a movement around a progressive agenda, defend the rule of law, and to mobilize diverse coalitions to save our democracy.

OBJECTIVE: Hold public leaders accountable, support immigrants/refugees and marginalized populations.

Salem Region Indivisible is a local group that works with the national Indivisible organization.  We formed in November, 2024 when several women from the Salem area came together to support each other and the larger community in anticipation of the incoming administration and the challenges it would likely present for the United States, our region and democracy itself.
Since that time, we have grown tremendously.  We have groups working in many areas, including holding elected officials at all levels of government accountable; tracking state and national legislation; supporting the rights of workers, immigrants and other marginalized populations; and resisting the destruction of government programs such as Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.
If you are interested to join our group, attend our meetings, help us with our projects and events, and do more to defend democracy, email SRI@SalemRegionIndivisible.org

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

JULY 4, 2025: Republicans in Congress just passed what is arguably the worst legislation in the history of our country without even trying to hide the fact that it redistributes wealth from the poor to the ultra rich.

These are just a few of the ways that Trump and the Republicans’ recent bill will affect Oregonians
  • 10 Million people will lose their health care nationwide, $1 TRILLION cuts to Medicaid
  • 220,000 Oregonians will be uninsured
  • Oregon will see one of the sharpest increases in uninsured people per capita, 5%
  • Oregon’s 37 rural hospitals are in danger of closing, serving over 1.4 million Oregonians
  • 1 in 4 nursing homes are expected to close, and more than half will cut staff
  • Oregon loses $1 Billion of SNAP benefits (“food stamps”)
  • Electricity costs are expected to increase by 30%
  •  ICE’s detention budget has increased by 13X, making it the third largest military force in the world, behind the United States’ and China’s military
  • $1 TRILLION in tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires

    ABOUT INDIVISIBLE — NATIONAL

    Go to IndivisibleGuide.org

When we put the Indivisible Guide online as a poorly formatted, typo-filled Google Doc, we never imagined how far and fast it would spread. Since December, the guide has been downloaded over a million times. More than 4,500 local groups have signed up to resist the Trump agenda in nearly every congressional district in the country. What’s more, you all are putting the guide into action—showing up en masse to congressional district offices and events, and flooding the congressional phone lines. You’re resisting—and it’s working.

We are absolutely floored. It may have started as a tweeted Google Doc, but now (and sorry if this sounds corny) we feel an extraordinary sense of responsibility to help this movement as best we can.

Bottom line, we want to do two big things better:

    1. Demystify congressional advocacy. We get hundreds of questions every day about what Congress is doing, how to organize locally (see the toolkit!), and how to advocate in different situations. We’re going to start sending out timely updates and resources on what’s going on in Congress and how you can best organize, make your voice heard, and influence your members of Congress.
    2. Support the community of local groups putting the Indivisible Guide into action. We want to provide shared tools to help groups organize events, communicate with each other, and share best practices and resources. This also means spotlighting local successes and supporting a sense of a shared purpose. You can see that shared purpose already forming—just look at this beautiful movement on Rachel Maddow.

We are already doing some of this! We now have over seventy (70!) volunteers working early mornings, late nights, weekends, and sick days on everything that you see the Indivisible Guide team do—email responses, congressional updates, the group directory, the website, our social media, and a bunch more. It’s been an amazing labor of love by a stellar group of, yeah we’ll say it, patriots. But we want to do more.

As we form a nonprofit*, we want to make something clear: we’re not the leaders of this movement. The last few weeks have made it abundantly clear that local groups are taking ownership of the resistance to Trump’s agenda themselves. You all are the leaders—we’re just here to help.

We’re still developing our long-term strategy, and we want to hear from you about what you need and want. But going forward, you’ll see a lot more from us in those two buckets of work above—we want to demystify the heck out of Congress and build a vibrant community of angelic troublemakers.

SR.INDIVISIBLE is a grassroots organization promoting democracy, social welfare, and working to cultivate a more resilient community. Our group leaders and members are volunteers and receive no compensation. 100% of our revenues are derived through donations.

Our members are people you know. They are your friends, neighbors, family, co-workers, and other acquaintances, who give up their valuable time to participate in shared efforts to:
    • Protect voters’ rights
    • Support labor and workers’ rights
    • Protect personal rights and freedoms including reproductive rights
    • Register voters
    • Inform the public on issues/problems in local or national government that impact everyone
    • Advocate for the elimination of discrimination based on race, gender, religion, and other social or cultural identities
    • Protect our environment and raise awareness on issues affecting climate change
Every dollar you contribute goes to securing the facilities, services and supplies necessary to make these efforts effective. Also, know that every donation is not only appreciated but squeezed to maximize its value.
Donations are not tax-deductible, but our treasurer tracks every donation and members are welcome to see how we are spending them.
